1. Approximately 38.4% of Vietnamese have the surname “Nguyen” (pronounced almost like “win”), largely because the most recent imperial dynasty had the surname “Nguyen”. In past years, when a new ruling family would take the throne, they would either force others to take the name or bestow the name upon citizens as an honor, though some citizens would change their name on their own in order to disguise surnames from past dynasties that had been overthrown, and subsequently avoid retribution.
